I’ve got loyal fans – they’re friends who always support me – and apart from that, I’ve built everything up on my own; I also put up with all the envy and resentment that comes with it. I’m proud of it – very proud… and besides, I like Merle Haggard’s songs. I stand by that.

In the underground music scene, you don’t exactly make yourself popular by mentioning Amy Winehouse. It wasn’t until after her death that I realised she actually knew what she was doing and was one of us – at least in her heart. Anyone who covers Sam Cooke and the Shirelles can’t be a bad person. It’s been 15 years since she died. I honour her… I don’t care
