Wayne Hancock is one of those musicians who are completely underrated by the audience. He is a musician’s musician. His influence on the outlaw and hillbilly and death roots scene can hardly be overestimated. I only saw him live once, in Hamburg at the Grünspan. A 500-capacity club and maybe 80 people were there. I still can’t quite understand it to this day.
I was lucky enough to play with his extraordinary guitarist in Dresden a few years later. I think they called him “Doc” – I have to admit, I’ve forgotten the name.
